Need a Breast Reduction? Is it Right for You?

If you are tired of your bra straps digging into your shoulder or watching your breasts drop to your knees when taking off your bra, there’s a procedure available that can help you. It’s called reduction mammaplasty, or more commonly breast reduction surgery, and it involves removing excess skin, fat, and other tissue from your breasts.

Reasons for Seeking Surgery

Mammaplasty is performed on women who have a lot of discomfort from their large breasts or simply want to have their chest in proportion with the rest of their body. Sometimes these women may also have saggy breasts, poor posture, or a negative self-image. They may have trouble finding clothing that fit, or they can’t run or participate in physical activities that other women can do.

Before and After Surgery

You should have a lengthy discussion with your plastic surgeon at your first consultation about everything from your medical history to your expectations of the surgery. Your surgeon will take your measurements, discuss the benefits and risks associated with this procedure, and he or she will discuss the procedure itself.

The procedure involves the surgeon making the first incision around the areola and then a vertical incision down the breast under the areola. Your surgeon will go on to make a horizontal incision in the crease under your breast. He or she will then remove excess skin, fat, and other tissue. Although still attached, the areola and nipple will most likely be removed and reattached higher on the breasts.

Your breasts will be bandaged after the breast reduction surgery and they will most likely be sore, bruised, and swollen for a little while. Post-operative instructions will be given and you should follow them to limit your chance of complications. For more information on breast reduction in Melbourne contact our office today!
