Abdominoplasty may offer both functional and cosmetic benefits

Tummy tuck Melbourne

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is one of the more common plastic surgery procedures. For many people, the primary reason for seeking a tummy tuck is cosmetic. They would like to have the flat abdomen that is prized as a sign of health and fitness in our modern society, and have not been able to achieve this through exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

However, this may not be the only benefit of having abdominoplasty. There may also be a functional benefit to having this procedure. A recent study showed that tummy tucks may help with certain daily health concerns that are unfortunately fairly common in our society.

Abdominoplasty has been shown to improve back pain and incontinence

In the study, more than 200 women undergoing a tummy tuck procedure were included. They filled out questionnaires both before and after the procedure, indicating how often they experienced certain symptoms and how much those symptoms interfered with their quality of life.

The results showed a dramatic benefit for both back pain and incontinence. Before the procedure, more than 40% of the women reported that urinary incontinence was a “significant problem” in their lives; after having abdominoplasty, this was reduced to only 1.6%. Similarly, more than half of the women reported moderate or severe back pain before the procedure, while only 9% still reported this afterward. Although this study is the first of its kind and additional studies will be needed to confirm the findings, this is an encouraging indication that abdominoplasty may offer benefits beyond the cosmetic.

How does a tummy tuck help?

Researchers believe that abdominoplasty is helpful because it restores the function of the rectus abdominis muscle (the muscle that runs vertically along the front of the belly). The two halves of the muscle are separated by a band of connective tissue; when this tissue is overly stretched, the muscle is unable to function normally. Abdominoplasty brings the two halves of the muscle together again, restoring it to its proper form.

The rectus abdominis muscle is very important in providing support to the spine and maintaining good posture. When it’s unable to function properly, the lower back often experiences stress, which can lead to back pain. Researchers believe that restoring the muscle allows it to support the back and maintain healthy posture, which in turn could reduce back pain.

In addition, restoring strength to the core could reduce the amount of stress on the pelvic floor. Incontinence can result when the pelvic floor experiences too much stress and is weakened, leaving it unable to hold back the flow of urine, particularly under certain conditions (such as when jumping, coughing, or sneezing). The pelvic floor may be better able to handle stress after the rectus abdominis muscle is restored, because of the extra support by the abdominal muscles. It’s believed that this is how a tummy tuck can help to reduce incontinence.
