Breast Augmentation with Breast Implants (Augmentation Mammoplasty)

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure designed to help women achieve a more proportionate, flattering breast shape and size. Breast augmentation with breast implants is ideal for patients who wish to enhance their curves, add fullness and lift to sagging breasts, or have their breast(s) reconstructed following surgery. As breast enhancement is a highly individualized procedure, we offer several breast augmentation procedures and techniques at our Melbourne practice. Patients will have the opportunity to discuss their surgical options with Dr. David Ross.

During breast augmentation consultations, Dr. Ross will go over every aspect of your breast implant surgery, including incision placement (i.e., via armpit, beneath the breast, or around the nipple), and implant material (silicone vs. saline). Based on your aesthetic goals and a careful measurement of your chest, Dr. Ross will help you determine the appropriate size for your breast implants at the time of your consultation.

Who is a candidate for breast augmentation with breast implants?

If you feel your breasts are too small, breast augmentation with breast implants may be the ideal procedure to enhance your body image. Breast implants can be used to add size to smaller chests, and to even out severely asymmetrical breasts. Breast implants can be combined with a breast lift at our Melbourne practice to add volume to breasts altered by age, pregnancy, weight loss, or nursing. Implants of various sizes may also be incorporated into a breast reconstruction treatment plan for women who have undergone a mastectomy. To find out if breast implants are right for you, contact our Melbourne practice.

What can I expect during and after breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery will require only a short hospital stay. Most patients undergo the procedure as a day surgery case but an overnight stay can be arranged. Patients can expect swelling and bruising for several weeks following surgery, and normal activities can be resumed as soon as both patient and doctor feel comfortable with the progression of the recovery. Following breast implant surgery, there will be minimal scarring (a few centimetres long) that will gradually fade over time. Some patients will develop scar tissue around their breast implants, causing the implants to feel overly firm. As with any surgery, infection and bleeding following breast augmentation is always a risk. Patients should be aware that revisional breast augmentation surgery may be required if the breast implants leak or break. This is not a common occurrence and is discussed in further detail in Dr. Ross' personal views on breast augmentation.

Performed at our Melbourne, Victoria surgical centre, breast augmentation is a relatively straightforward procedure. The majority of our patients experience little or no side effects. If you are interested in breast implants, contact our Melbourne plastic surgery practice today.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Breast reduction surgery is a plastic surgery procedure designed to create a more proportionate and comfortable shape by removing excess skin and tissue from overly large breasts. There are several techniques used in breast reduction surgery; generally, the procedure involves removing fatty breast tissue, then repositioning the nipples in order to reshape the chest. During your breast reduction consultation, Melbourne plastic surgeon David Ross, M.D. will determine the optimum surgical technique for your body type and physical condition.

Who is a candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is ideal for women with large, heavy breasts who are physically uncomfortable or embarrassed by the size and shape of their chest. While large breasts pose aesthetic concerns for some patients, there are also significant physical problems associated with heavy breasts that can be remedied with breast reduction surgery. If you are suffering from neck pain, back pain, and poor posture, a breast reduction can diminish or eliminate these health problems and also boost your self-esteem by giving you a more pleasing, proportionate body shape. We suggest you visit Dr. Ross for a breast reduction consultation to find out if the surgery is right for you.

What can I expect during and after a breast reduction procedure?

Dr. Ross will perform your breast reduction surgery at a local Melbourne hospital, and you can expect to remain in the hospital for a brief time. Recovery time will vary, but normal activities are generally resumed after approximately three weeks. Side effects of breast reduction surgery can include diminished sensation in the nipple, minor size differential between the breasts, as well as scarring beneath the breasts. During every breast reduction surgery performed through our Melbourne practice, Dr. Ross will do his best to diminish scarring by hiding incisions below the breast.

The ideal breast reduction candidate will enter surgery with realistic goals, and not expect perfection. The goal of breast reduction surgery is to ease physical symptoms and create a more proportional, pleasing figure. The vast majority of patients who undergo this procedure are extremely happy with the freedom breast reduction surgery can bring.

At Bayside Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ross offers several revisional procedures, including breast implant removal, breast implant replacement, and revisional surgery to correct poor surgical outcome from previous breast augmentation surgery. Dr. David Ross offers revisional breast augmentation surgery at his Melbourne, Victoria practice to patients who are unhappy with a prior augmentation, or those who would like to achieve better results. Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift is a common surgical procedure intended to remove sagging skin and shift the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. A breast lift is not used to increase the size of the chest, but rather to recontour and lift the breasts, adding volume and redefining the shape of the chest. Patients who would like to lift and enhance their chest can choose to combine a breast lift with breast implants for maximum results.

Breast lift surgery involves trimming away sagging, excess skin, shifting the nipple to a higher position on the breast mound, and creating a firmer, natural bustline. During your breast lift consultation at our Melbourne practice, Dr. Ross will discuss the type of incision(s) that will be used in your breast lift procedure, and help you determine whether you would benefit from breast implants in addition to the standard breast lift. Depending on the amount of skin that needs to be removed, incisions may be required along the breast fold, around the nipple, or around the nipple and vertically up and down the breast. Dr. Ross will attempt to minimize any scarring when undertaking this procedure.

Who is a candidate for breast lift surgery?

Breast lift surgery can benefit women who are self-conscious about sagging breasts, as well as women who have lost breast volume following pregnancy, weight loss, and breast-feeding. Breast lift surgery is appropriate for women of all ages; however, most women wait until after giving birth to undergo the procedure, as pregnancy may alter their results. The surgery is ideal for women with smaller breasts, but a breast lift is also successful on full-chested women and patients with asymmetrical breasts. It should be noted that if breast lift surgery is undertaken less than six years following your most recent pregnancy, then insurance coverage would be applicable.

What can I expect during and after a breast lift procedure?

Dr. Ross performs breast lift procedures at a Melbourne area hospital under general anaesthesia. Following breast lift surgery, most patients are able to resume their daily routine after several weeks of recovery. Patients will likely experience mild to moderate discomfort during recovery time, and must be careful not to engage in strenuous physical activity. Following a breast lift, there may be slight irregularities in the size of the breasts, as well as the position of the nipples. Complications from a breast lift are rare, but may include infection, post-op bleeding, delayed healing, and poor scarring.

After a breast lift procedure performed by Melbourne plastic surgeon Dr. David Ross, patients can expect their breasts to regain much of the firmness lost from age, pregnancy, weight loss, or other factors. Skin will be tighter, and the breasts will be raised to a more flattering position. Incision lines will fade over time, and can usually be hidden beneath clothing. Though a breast lift is not a permanent solution to the effects of ageing, the benefits of the surgery will last for years. Pregnancy and weight gain are both factors that can later diminish the results of surgery.
