Breast Augmentation Surgery - Common Misconceptions

Breast augmentation surgery, which involves the use of breast implants, is one of the most popular and steadily growing procedures performed by plastic surgeons today. Despite their popularity and commonness, many people still believe myths and rumors about the procedure that have been proven to be untrue.

One commonly held myth is that women who have breast implants will not be able to breast-feed their babies. This is completely untrue and may be just part of the anti-breast feeding movement that is popping up in pockets throughout the country. In reality, women who have this procedure will still produce milk and be able to breast feed like women without implants. It is possible, however, that the amount of milk produced may be less with implants and it may cause a slower flow of milk. All of these things can be overcome with the help of a lactation consultant.

Another common misconception is that women who have this procedure will be coerced by their doctors into getting larger implants than what they originally intended. However, most plastic surgeons are very reputable and will not pressure a patient to get work done that she does not want. This may be more of a matter of “buyer’s remorse” being blamed on the doctor when the woman is not happy with the size she chose and thinks her breasts are too big. Your doctor will likely let you sample different sized models by just placing them in your current bra to give an idea of what you will look like after surgery.

Despite rumors, breast implants do not make the breast look and feel different than a normal breast. The technology has advanced over time to create realistic looking breasts and plastic surgeons are trained in the best methods to have the best outcomes. The only way that the implants will look unnatural is if a woman picks a size that is so grossly out of proportion to the rest of her body.

Also, it is not true that breast implants are likely to burst. Although this many happen rarely, most women do not have issues with their implants after they have been put in place. Some implants may need to be replaced at some point, so it’s good to keep that in mind, but the implants are not super fragile items that are easily broken.
