Breast reconstruction surgery is very common amongst breast cancer survivors who have had a mastectomy. The surgery rebuilds the breast so that it is similar to the size and shape that is once was. The nipple and areola can also be added. Many women have made the choice to go forth with the procedure for various reasons such as allowing their breasts to look balanced when wearing a bra, permanently regaining breast contour, and to avoid using external prosthesis. The results from the surgery also have been a step in improving self-esteem and body image.   There are two types of breast reconstruction surgery that can be done. Immediate reconstruction is done during the same time as the mastectomy. The benefit of having this option is that the tissues in the chest are not damaged by scarring of radiation therapy.
