Of all the reconstructive surgery procedures available, there is none with more dramatic results than rhinoplasty. Whereas other face-altering procedures merely scratch the surface, by the reduction of lines, creases and wrinkles--rhinoplasty can change the internal structure, foundation, and outer appearance of the nose itself.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty, also commonly referred to as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure done to improve function and appearance. It can be performed for aesthetic purposes only, or to correct trauma-related incidents, birth defects, or breathing problems. It can also be combined with other surgical procedures such as cheekbone augmentation to enhance the overall aesthetic results. These surgeries are usually performed by an otolaryngologist, maxillofacial surgeon or plastic surgeon. Rhinoplasty can change: the nose size; width at the bridge; profile, with bumps or depressions taken out; tip too bulbous, drooping or too upturned; nostrils too large or wide; overall asymmetry and deviation. You may have your own thoughts on what should be done. If you have photos of the "perfect nose" for you, remember to bring them. But only after a thorough consultation with the surgeon will you know what changes you can achieve.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty Surgery

At a pre-operative meeting, the surgeon will evaluate your general health and any pre-existing health conditions that may be a risk factor. He will then examine, measure and take "before" photographs of your face. Then discuss your options, what he thinks should be done, your anesthesia choices, answer any questions you may have, and set up the time schedule for your new nose. At some time prior to surgery you may be asked to get some lab tests, start a new medication or adjust an old one. In any event, there are several items that you will be requested to stop: smoking, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding. One can more easily forgive beauty marks, crow's feet, overbites, and other tiny human imperfections, but not the nose. The nose, as society has unfairly dictated, is the most prominent part of the body that is, often in this cosmetic world, the feature by which the entire body is judged.
