Achieve Facial Harmony through Rhinoplasty

RhinoplastyRhinoplasty is performed at our Melbourne plastic surgery practice either as a cosmetic procedure, with the goal of improving the aesthetics of the nose, or as a method of correcting birth defects and nasal irregularities, usually as a result of facial trauma. Rhinoplasty can help bring balance to all facial features by creating improved symmetry and proportions between the nose, eyes, chin, and mouth.

During a rhinoplasty procedure, the nasal bones and cartilages are trimmed and sculpted to create a more flattering shape. For most primary rhinoplasty patients, incisions are made through the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. On occasions an open technique may be required, especially in revisionary rhinoplasty cases or cases of traumatic nasal deformity, in which case a small inconspicuous scar is left on the nasal columnella. Rhinoplasty can also be undertaken in conjunction with nasal airway surgery, such as septoplasty and turbinatectomy, to improve nasal airway function as well as appearance.

Dr. Ross has considerable experience in performing both aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty and should be able to achieve an outcome that would meet your expectations following rhinoplasty surgery. To schedule your initial rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Ross, please contact Bayside Plastic Surgery today.

Should my rhinoplasty be undertaken by a plastic surgeon or ENT surgeon?

Rhinoplasty is a very precise surgical procedure where particular care is required in every step to be assured of a satisfactory and desirable outcome. Both plastic surgeons and ear nose and throat (ENT) surgeons are extensively trained in the anatomy and physiology of the nose. Many surgeons trained in both specialties do not feel comfortable to take on the intricacies that rhinoplasty surgery can present; however, some surgeons in each field have considerable expertise and experience in rhinoplasty surgery and are competent to undertake correction of a variety of nasal deformities.

It is generally viewed that ENT surgical expertise is better addressed to the issues of functional nasal surgery, whereas plastic surgeons are more trained in aesthetic detail and more complex reconstructions. However, experience in rhinoplasty surgery usually means that surgeons of each background are able to handle both situations competently. What is important is finding a surgeon who is experienced, competent and that you have a rapport with and can trust, and then you are likely to get the outcome you desire.

Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?

If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose, a rhinoplasty procedure may help you feel better about your appearance and improve your self-esteem. Rhinoplasty can be used to improve a nose that is too big, reduce nostrils that are too wide, correct a crooked nasal bridge, reduce a bump on the nasal bridge, or raise a droopy nasal tip. Patients with breathing difficulties are also excellent candidates for rhinoplasty, which should be able to alleviate nasal airway obstruction resulting in improved nasal airflow. Dr. Ross can correct a variety of nasal defects with a rhinoplasty procedure, including a deviated septum and nasal damage resulting from injury and trauma.

Many patients undergo rhinoplasty on its own; however, some patients elect to undergo rhinoplasty as part of a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan. Rhinoplasty is commonly combined with brow and neck lift surgery, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), and non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments, including injectable therapies.

What can I expect during and after a rhinoplasty procedure?

Depending on the complexity of the deformity and resultant corrective surgery, a rhinoplasty procedure can last anywhere from one to four hours, and may be undertaken as a day surgery procedure or require a one or two night hospital stay. Following rhinoplasty surgery, there can be swelling of the nose and bruising around the eyes and patients will be advised to wear a splint to protect the nose, during the early healing period. The use of cold compresses over the eyes and nose in the first 48 hours will allow swelling to settle quite quickly. Many patients will have some bleeding from the nose early after surgery but this should cease rapidly. Some patients may require internal nasal splints and nasal packing, particularly if septoplasty surgery is undertaken as a part of their rhinoplasty. Maintaining clean nasal air passages early after surgery with moistened cotton buds and nasal drops will avoid many postoperative complications. In many cases as swelling reduces gradually, the final outcome of a rhinoplasty procedure will not be apparent for up to
six months following surgery. The recovery period is usually about two weeks when the nasal splint is removed and then patients can return to normal activities as soon as they feel comfortable. Exertional sporting activities are best avoided for six to eight weeks after surgery especially if airway surgery is also undertaken as a part of the rhinoplasty.

A successful rhinoplasty procedure will produce an improved appearance that looks and feels natural. The extent of change will vary depending on the structure of your nose and your aesthetic goals. During your rhinoplasty consultation at our Melbourne practice, Dr. Ross will do a full aesthetic and functional assessment and advise you of a treatment plan that will give you an idea of the likely outcome you can expect following surgery.
