Look More Vibrant with Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is performed at our Melbourne plastic surgery practice to correct several of the more noticeable signs of aging, namely droopy, overhanging upper eyelids and puffy bags seen underneath the eyes. Plastic and cosmetic surgeon David Ross performs both upper and lower eyelid surgery to remove sagging skin that may be obstructing vision and causing discomfort and tiredness. Excess upper eyelid skin can contribute to a tired or aged appearance and will only worsen with age. Dr. Ross can also perform lower eyelid surgery to remove the stubborn fat deposits that appear beneath the eyelids called bags or festoons, which can cause an aged, sad, or tired look.

During both upper and lower eyelid surgery, Dr Ross makes an inconspicuous incision along the natural contours of the eyelids, trimming away excess skin and muscle, and then redraping the remaining eyelid for a smoother tighter eyelid appearance. In the procedure the herniated periorbital fat is removed or repositioned, tightening the supporting tissues below the eyelid skin. The outcome of the procedure results in a rejuvenated, smoother, and tighter eyelid contour.

Who is a candidate for eyelid surgery?

Patients who are particularly troubled by bags underneath the eyes and folds of skin on their upper lids are good candidates for blepharoplasty surgery of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Eyelid surgery is ideal for those who want to look refreshed and more awake, but may not be ready for a full facelift. Because eyelid surgery is not effective for treating wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) or drooping eyebrows, the procedure is commonly performed in conjunction with a brow lift or other surgical and non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures, including Botulinum Toxin injections and laser skin resurfacing procedures.

During your consultation with Dr. Ross, he will evaluate your case and discuss your aesthetic goals with you. Based on your discussions, he will recommend the treatment plan that is best suited to your unique circumstances. Some patients achieve excellent results with either upper or lower blepharoplasty. However, others require both procedures to achieve the best possible results.

What can I expect during and after eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery generally takes one to two hours, and can be performed either on an outpatient basis at a day surgery facility or with a short overnight stay at a Melbourne hospital. Upper eyelid surgery can be undertaken under local anaesthetic only but lower eyelid surgery will require general anaesthesia. Recovery time is rapid and most patients return to work within 7 to 10 days. Sutures are usually removed after five to seven days at which time virtually all swelling and bruising has dissipated. Following eyelid surgery, some patients may experience vision problems, especially in bright or windy conditions, but these tend to diminish as recovery progresses. On occasions the lower eyelids may remain swollen for a number of weeks and then taping is used to support the eyelid during healing and protect against ectropion (excessive scarring), but further complications are rare.

Because incisions are made along the natural creases of the eyelids, scarring from eyelid surgery should be minimal and become virtually imperceptible over time. After a relatively brief healing period, patients can expect to look more alert, refreshed and rejuvenated. Blepharoplasty surgery is a procedure that has a significant aesthetic benefit for a relatively quick and simple operation.
