Breast Reduction

Plastic Surgeon David Ross

Look and Feel Better with Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure designed to create a more proportionate and comfortable shape by removing excess skin and tissue from disproportionately large and heavy breasts. There are several techniques that can be used to perform breast reduction surgery; generally, the procedure involves removing excessive fatty breast tissue, then repositioning the nipples and tightening loose skin in order to reshape the breast. During your breast reduction consultation at our Melbourne practice, plastic surgeon David Ross, M.D. will determine the optimal surgical technique for your body shape and physical appearance.

The information below is designed to provide a brief overview of breast reduction surgery. Dr. Ross has also written some further personal views about breast reduction surgery based on his experience in over 600 cases, which we invite you to consider.

Who is a candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is often ideal for women with large, heavy breasts who are physically uncomfortable with or self-conscious about the size and shape of their chests. While large breasts pose aesthetic concerns for some patients, there are also significant physical problems associated with heavy breasts that can be remedied with breast reduction surgery. If you are suffering from neck pain, back pain, and poor posture, a breast reduction can diminish or eliminate these health problems and also boost your self-esteem by giving you a more aesthetically pleasing, proportionate body shape.

Some candidates for breast reduction surgery choose to undergo the procedure on its own. Others elect to combine breast reduction with such aesthetic procedures as liposuction. For our male patients who suffer from enlarged breasts, or gynaecomastia, Dr. Ross also performs male breast reduction surgery.

What can I expect during and after a breast reduction procedure?

Dr. Ross can perform your breast reduction surgery at a number of smaller Melbourne hospitals, and you can expect to remain in the hospital for a brief time, usually only overnight. Recovery time will vary, but normal activities are generally resumed after approximately two weeks. Side effects of breast reduction surgery can include diminished sensation in the nipple, minor size differential between the breasts, as well as scarring beneath the breasts. During every breast reduction surgery performed through our Melbourne practice, Dr. Ross will do his best to diminish scarring by hiding incisions below the breast.

The ideal breast reduction candidate approaches surgery with realistic goals and an appropriate outcome will be achievable. In deciding whether to pursue a breast reduction procedure look at some of the outcomes in previous patients. The goal of breast reduction surgery is to ease physical symptoms and create a more proportional, pleasingly aesthetic figure. The vast majority of patients who undergo this procedure are extremely happy with the freedom breast reduction surgery can bring.
